Riverside Farmers Market Returns to Its Roots

When Riverside Market first opened, it was envisioned as a true farmers market at heart — a place where locals could shop seasonal produce, fresh bread, quality meats, seafood straight from the source, and handmade goods, all directly from the people who made them.

Over time, Riverside has grown into one of Christchurch’s most vibrant dining destinations. While this evolution has brought incredible variety and energy, the original farmers market spirit has taken a step back — until now.

On Sunday 28 September 2025, Riverside will launch the Riverside Farmers Market, a new monthly event held on the last Sunday of every month. Set against the backdrop of the picturesque Avon River, this outdoor market will return to the essence of what a farmers market is meant to be – a showcase of fresh, local, and seasonal food, brought directly to the community by the people who grow, catch, bake, and make it.

Visitors can expect crisp vegetables picked at dawn, warm loaves straight from the oven, handcrafted cheeses, free-range meats, and freshly caught seafood – every stall reflecting the authenticity and seasonality that define a genuine farmers market. It will be an opportunity to meet local producers, hear their stories, and reconnect with the source of our food.

fresh produce, at its finest

By complementing Riverside’s daily indoor offerings, the Farmers Market creates a unique balance – combining the energy and variety of Christchurch’s most vibrant food hub with the authenticity of a producer-led market right outside.

The Riverside Farmers Market is about more than just shopping – it’s about celebrating Canterbury’s food heritage, supporting our local producers, and bringing the community together.
